New Year Reflection | The 2018 Edition

It's been a year of new eras, moving on, and growing up. If you've not yet taken a chance to reflect on 2018, let's look back together on what went right. Rather annoyingly, it is so easy for our brains to automatically judge our year as negative, reminding ourselves of all the things that didn't quite go to plan. However, with rain comes rainbows, and this is our chance to change how we reflect, instead of jumping to negative conclusions and statements. Whether you improved your skills, you got that promotion at work, you achieved or worked towards a goal, you finished or started education, or something a little smaller like having a go at something that you once thought you couldn't.

"Finish your year on a good note,

take from it what you need,

and keep going."

I'll kick this off, and share with you a few positives from my own past year. I guess the main one is finally gaining my degree. It was quite possibly the hardest experience of my whole life, but overcoming the obstacles, working my way through the difficult times, succeeding and sometimes not reaching my own expectations, all led to a final success which I overcame with pride. What did I learn? I learned that I need to believe in myself more. I didn't at all, and those around me at that time knew it too. Since completing my undergraduate course, my belief in myself has been on the rise. I think that it helps when you're doing something that you are truly passionate about career-wise, but generally, I feel much more capable. Without going into too much detail, I was completely fighting the odds when writing my dissertation. The only way to describe what I was going through was absolute chaos. I fought myself every time into research, meetings, and library sessions whilst writing my thesis. It focused on the objectification of our bodies within the digital world, a topic that was relevant and had context to our millennial culture. I not only passed that dissertation, I got a grade of 72. A first class dissertation that I had earned through every single word, every single struggle, and every single stress. That was a proud moment of 2018.

I graduated amongst my friends and my family, with a second class first division degree in BA Art. Although, I didn't reach a first class overall, I don't beat myself up over it because I know how much it took from me, what I gave, and what I didn't have left to give. I spread my time across my passions, my degree, but also a job, and that was my decision.

"I don't beat myself up over it because

I know how much it took from me, what I gave,

and what I didn't have left to give."

Post graduation, I began my career in social media marketing as a Social Media Manager for an activewear brand. I manage blogging around my day-job, and I still completely adore it. Up until a few months ago, I was juggling three jobs. I was enjoying each job, but I felt under so much pressure. I barely had any time for myself or my loved ones, and so I made the decision to cut down my commitments. I had so many jobs on my brain at once, jumping from one to the other, and I couldn't switch off. This was a big step in my own decision making, something I've never been overly strong at. Since then, I've felt more independent than I ever have and I live each day my own way.

"In my early teenage years,
I always thought that at twenty-two
 people had their life together,
but I'm definitely beginning to realise that
we are all just making it up
 as we go along!"

On the Evie Rose Lane side of things, my blog and social media platforms have once again brought me to some fabulous places and events this year. Places, such as The Ivy Chelsea and The Dorchester were most definitely at the top of my favourites list! I've been able to place more time and effort into my content since completing my degree, and that is something that I have massively enjoyed, particularly on Instagram. Investing this time has brought more value to my brand, more enjoyment to my work, and has curated a story-telling theme to the imagery that I share with you all.

Another passion of mine that I have managed to stay consistent with this year is fitness. Despite changing gyms, moving home, and changing up my daily routine, I have managed to keep my training regular. I have pushed further, tried out new exercises, and I continue to build on being the best version of myself.

Of course, negatives have also tested me this year, like they probably will have all of us. As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, we must take from the experiences what we need, and keep going. It does no good for us to automatically exclaim how awful our year has been, disregarding everything that we did well or the good things that happened to us. I used to be that person, dwelling on the awful things that I had gone through, when I should have been proud of the me that was fighting through each day, and overcoming that negativity. I may have had a turbulent year in some aspects, but not in all, and I'm certainly not going to let those "some aspects" determine and re-write my all.

A few reflection questions to ask yourself...

The answers can be as small or large as you like. I've noted fairly large moments above, but other examples include reading several books this year, getting up earlier, and teaching myself more about editing photography. Why not note down your answers with the questions, and you can try this all again next year.

- What did I do this year that went well?
- Where did I go that I really enjoyed?
- What did I improve on this year?
- What did I stay consistent at this year?
- What did I work towards completing or have I completed this year?
- What am I proud of myself for?
- What was a really great moment to remember this year?

Here's to 2018, and wishing you all a very Happy New Year!

Live Your Luxe Life

Home is where the heart is.

As I’ve previously mentioned on my instagram, I absolutely love being at home and in my own space. I’m incredibly lucky that where I live now is a fairly quiet community so there is little to no drama.

Around my work, training, and spending time with my loved ones, I like to invest my time in keeping our flat clean, tidy, and elegant. Although it’s sometimes a struggle with little storage space, we manage to maintain a comfy yet pretty environment which we lovingly call our own. Just don't take a look in the wardrobe!

I adore nothing more than being at home in a fresh pair of sleek, and comfortable pyjamas. Sleep is so important to me and I really do hate missing it, perhaps that’s why I often find myself debating if a night out for no reason is actually all that. From once having a really bad relationship with sleep when I was in my first few years at University (one extreme to the other), to now having a good routine, I have a lot to say about my bedtime tips and previous mistakes, but perhaps I will save that for another post.

Investing in the little luxuries of life, no matter how small can make all the difference, whether it's a time or money investment. I'm not just talking about the materialistic luxuries either, we should be grateful for the luxuries of life that we don't expect. That fantastic night's sleep, or that warm feeling that you get when you do something nice for another person. Luxury is classed as "a state of great comfort or elegance, especially when involving great expense" but this isn't purely defining products and wealth. I encourage you all to live your luxe life!

How I Shop The Summer Fashion Sales

As a shopaholic, I adore summer sales and any sale in general. However, when you're shorter on time, it's sometimes hard to browse through endless rails or have the patience to do so either. I've created a little shortlist of tips to help the sale rails appear less daunting, and to aid you in finding the best pieces for your summer wardrobe whilst being on a budget!

DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST ONLINE

I actually first saw this dress on the online Zara sale, but with little funds at the time, I left it abandoned in my basket. Shopping the sale in-store, I kept an eye out for the dress that I knew I had my eye on, and by chance, it was there. I prefer to try things on before I buy, because a lot of things now just aren't how they appear online or they don't fit me how I would want them to. However, not everything online will be in-store, so it's always worth checking both. I often find when a sale is first announced, it is best to be one of the first people looking at it online. Whether its on your commute to work, or on a chilled evening at home, you have to be committed if you want to make the most out of the sales. The convenience of online shopping also helps, as you don't even need to leave your house now to get something new for your wardrobe, so really, there isn't much commitment at all, you just need to beat other people to it!

GO EARLY IN THE MORNING

Sale rails are stressful for everyone, because no one seems to respect them enough to keep them tidy! Although sales assistents try their best, I can tell you from first hand experience, when it's busy, it is impossible to keep a sale rail looking on point throughout the working day. This is why, if I am shopping in-store, I like to be an early bird and get there while it's tidy and the shops are pretty much deserted. I find the best pieces, in my own time, and I don't need to hunt through piles of clothes on the floor or queue for the changing rooms!

MAKE A BUDGET & AVOID BUYING UNECESSARY ITEMS

In general, I try to stick to this tip when I am shopping. You must remember that stores, shops, and supermarkets are designed to tempt you into buying extra things that you often don't need. To avoid this, keep a check on your budget and don't be tempted by the products lined up by the till unless you actually need them.

ALWAYS TRY IT ON

This is more of a recent tip that I have established. As a child, I never ever wanted to try things on, because I found it boring and most things fitted me anyway. However, since my body type has changed and from dropping a few dress sizes, my size seems to vary between shops. I am actually not 100% sure by any size, I have to just try it on these days and if it works, it works, and if it doesn't then sadly, it can't come home with me.

CHECK THE RETURNS POLICY

If you're rushed for time, I understand that sometimes its not feasible to try everything on. That is why you must always check with the sales assistant what their returns policy is. It varies between shops anyway, but some stores have different policies for their sale items also. Shoutout to Topshop for keeping their sale returns the same as normal with your receipt and sending the money directly back onto your payment card. No thank you to that credit note or exchange only!

FORGET IT'S DISCOUNTED, WILL YOU ACTUALLY WEAR IT?

I am still training myself on this one, and I'm improving I must say! I am quite limited on space, and I try to be sensible with my money, but every one knows that I love clothes. In the past, I've often bought things and not been 100% in love with the item, or I have bought it and never felt confident or comfortable enough to wear it. It is such a waste, and therefore now I will only buy something if it wows me and I know that I will wear it! Don't be fooled by a good deal, it may be a huge discount but its not a good deal if it doesn't benefit you and if you don't ever wear it.

ENQUIRE ABOUT STUDENT DISCOUNT, IF YOU HAVE IT

Often a lot of shops still offer student discount on sale items, so if you have it, make sure you ask and make the most out of it while you can!

There you have it, my favourite tips for getting through the summer sales. If you have any tips that I haven't mentioned, be sure to leave a comment below & I'll add them to the list! Happy shopping all!

Keeping it Cool In & Outside of the Gym

"I'm a believer that gym visits don't have to be boring, so why should your gym-wear be?"

Surrounded by workout videos and inspiration now at our fingertips, no one really delves into what you can wear outside of the gym, after, or on your way to your sweaty session. I typically favour matching sports bra and legging sets in the gym, but outside of the gym, I like to layer up with a sweater or a hoodie for a cool and casual look. Attractive womens hoodies can be hard to come by, but the new range by NICCE has got us all covered. From pretty pastels, to urban styles, I’m sure most people will feel catered for by NICCE with this range.

Today, I'm sporting the sand coloured NICCE hoodie, which provokes a classic and relaxed style through an oversized fit. As a fan of pastel and neutral tones, this nude colour flatters my brunette colourings and skin tone, whilst contrasting with my dark workout clothes. Personally, I gravitate towards lighter tones in the summer as they're softer, and easier to wear, hence why this neutral was a winner for me!

Although I’m referencing the gym in this post, I also adore wearing hoodies while I'm chilling at home, or to cover up in the cooler summer evenings. There’s not much better than relaxing in your own space, propped comfortably in front of Netflix, wrapped up in your premium soft oversized hoodie!

GET THE LOOK

Since becoming a bit of a gym bunny, I like to think I've nailed what to wear when training and what to wear afterwards too. I've narrowed it down into simple catagories: the WELL FITTING BRA, the BOTTOM SCULPTING LEGGINGS, PERFECT FOOTWEAR, and the POST-WORKOUT CHILL GARMENTS.

1. The perfect sports bra can be hard to come by. I find the bigger the straps, the better they are at supporting you, whilst also being comfortable. As pretty as some of the thinner strapped bras are, I find the complex strap designs get confusing and they end up twisted, taking an element of comfort away.

2. If your gym leggings aren't flattering you, then girl, you are doing it wrong and there are better out there. Key things to look our for when picking leggings are: make sure they're squat proof, the appropriate length, tight but not too tight, shaped around the muscles, contain dry tech fabric so that sweat is a no show, and that they are designed to offer a flattering fit.

3.  Obviously, in the gym you are expected to wear appropriate trainers. However, I find that flatter style trainers are better for when you're training with weights, especially on leg days as they aid your stability and balance. I adore the style of knit trainers, however if you are training hard then consider getting a stronger shoe or be prepared for toe rips. Also, if your shoes are light in colour then always wear white socks!

4. As gym-wear is often deliberately skin tight for muscle compression and built to show off your shape, it’s somewhat comforting to be able to throw on a looser fit hoodie and call it ‘effortless chic’ after you’re done training. Oversized fits, like the NICCE hoodie that I am wearing in today's post are ideal for this. You can pick your own favourite from the range here, and let me know which style is your favourite fit in the comments.

What my Typical Week in the Gym Looks Like

Fitness is an incredible journey. I may not have the best abs, or the biggest bottom, but that’s not what my training is about. It’s about pushing myself to achieve my best, and to lead a happier and healthier lifestyle. I embarked my fitness journey initially as a new years resolution, back in 2016. Cardio featured heavily when I first started training, mainly out of fear of the weights section. After being taught exercises and how to use weights properly by a fantastic PT in my gym, I've never looked back since.

The gym is a place of clarity, sometimes of refuge. I release my own stresses, realise my own strengths, and I feel inspired there. Growing up, sport was never my thing but training with weights gives me an energy, an unforgettable energy. The schedule of my sessions at the moment features 3-4 sessions that typically range between 1 and a half to 2 hours long. I've always felt that training 6 days a week, at the moment, just wouldn't be sustainable for me, so I personally prefer to do 3-4 hard working sessions and always give them my 100%.

I begin each session now with 10-20 minutes high incline walk cardio. I find it not too strenuous yet a good warmup and fat burner to kickstart my workout. I then follow this with a 5 or 10 minute abs circuit, alternating between various 30 second exercises. I split my sessions up into muscle groups in order to ensure that the majority of muscles get trained. With core already covered, at the beginning of the week, I'll have an arms and shoulder session, some of my favourite exercises when training arms (but not limited to) include the shoulder press, tricep rope pushdowns, and cable bar bicep curls. Following that, I'll train back and chest, including (but not limited to) lat pull downs, t-bar rows, press ups, and the cable fly. Thirdly, I'll train legs and glutes. At the moment my top go-to legs and glutes exercises include heavy glute bridges using a smith machine, goblet squats, sumo deadlifts, Romanian deadlifts, hamstring curls, and the leg press. For the fourth session of the week, as I don't always fit one in, I'll vary with what I train. However, more often than not, it is either a second legs session as I feel they demand more of me. I am stronger on legs, I lift heavier, and building glutes is always a goal! Or I'll go for a more cardio and abs focused workout. I typically enjoy this if I feel that I need to relieve a bit of stress as it clears my mind a little, or I've just eaten too much cake that week and want more of a fat burner session!

I'd love to hear about what your typical week in the gym is like, and whether or not you found this post insightful or interesting? Let me know, and I'll then be sure to keep up the fitness posts. Have a great week!

LUXURY LIVING

For me, there is no better way to live more luxuriously than starting where the day begins, with a comfortable sleep. Recently I've been working on improving my sleeping pattern and the quality of my sleep through various lifestyle changes. I've stopped having my phone in the bedroom at night time, and I have replaced glaring at the screen for reading a book before sleeping instead. Relaxing my mind and eyes is just as important as relaxing my body. This winding down process has proven really influencial to my sleep and mood the next day. I've also purchased an alarm clock to ensure that I wake up with my routine.

Whilst all these changes are proving really important and beneficial, the main feature of this post is to talk about nightwear. I'm a pyjama girl, always have been, and probably always will be. I have found finding nightwear that is comfortable and still makes me feel pretty quite a task, until I discovered satin pyjamas. The silky, smooth texture of the fabric glides across my skin and provides lightweight comfort like no other. The elegance of the material allows you to feel confident and sophisticated, as opposed to that lathargic feeling.

Obviously, this is totally opinion based as some people may not find satin nightwear as comfortable as cotton based garments. I do like to switch between the two based on temperature! However,  this glamorous set is exactly everything that I was looking for. It's pretty, feminine and delicate.

You can shop this Spring nightwear set and others at Boux Avenue. The shorts in this set is eligible to match with the other available cami tops on the website, so if the full set isn't currently available, do check the alternative options. If you would like 20% off your order, then do use my ambassador discount code EVIELANE20. My discount is only available for another month or so, so please do be quick and don't miss out!

MUST-HAVE HYDRATION

My skincare routine has been something that I always want to improve. I definitely once thought that in order to purchase great skin products, it would cost me a lot of money as only the more luxurious products seem to show results. I’ve felt in the past that I’ve never found a drugstore skincare product that I have actually really loved and had seen proper results with, until now. That's why I have to tell you all about this new and exciting product that I found! This isn't a sponsored post or a paid collaboration, I just found something great and I wanted to share it with you all.

The L’Oreal Paris Hydra Genius Moisturiser contains aloe water & hyaluronic acid. This winning combination releases continuous hydration and locks in moisture for 72 hours. It’s liquid formula is lightweight and easy to apply. Massaging in circular motions, one pump of the product is enough to cover both the face and neck. Therefore, in a large size bottle with a high quality pump dispenser, I have high hopes that this will last me a good while, despite using it twice daily. Hydra Genius provides a hydrated and healthy glow, without any grease, glaze, or stickiness. The formula is also quickly absorbed and leaves your skin feeling instantly refreshed.

I personally bought this product on a whim whilst searching for a new and affordable daily moisturiser, but after just a week or two of use every morning and evening, I am obsessed! It’s innovative properties really have made a difference to my skin, and I’m so glad that I have found a moisturiser that is light and non-sticky! Hydra Genius is also available for various skin types, so you can pick the most suitable for you. I use the version designed for sensitive skin, as I have had reactions to products in the past causing redness and stinging sensations and I am also prone to dryness. I can noticeably recognise an improvement in regards to dry skin, and with the liquid being so comforting on my skin, I have not experienced any problems with it so far at all! Rating 10/10.

WINTER FASHION MUST HAVES

Faux Fur & Chelsea Boots

Say hello to my coat of the season! I can confirm it is as cosy as it looks.

I partnered this statement jacket with an otherwise basic all black outfit to showcase the beauty of the faux fur garment. I love the texture of this jacket, and it's ability to add instant glamour to an otherwise basic outfit. With simple black jeans, I added black ribbed leather look Chelsea boots to add a smart finish to a casual day look. Chelsea boots are definitely one of my winter fashion must-haves due to their versatility, comfort, and smart sophisticated style.
